Scale axis label values after elevate

Hi All,

I had a question regarding the scaling of axis values. Let's say that I have a plot and perform an elevate filter on it. This causes the values on the axis to shift. For the sake of easy understanding of the data, it would be nice to have the original axis labels for that data, vs the very large scaled ones.

For example this image:

Here we can see that the values for the Measurement axis should actually be between -.00856 and 0.123, but the axis labels show something like -10->450.

I got around this problem on the x-axis by setting the scale 3D axes value to compress that axis. Otherwise I have the same issue when using the transform filter to scale down the x-axis.

In ParaView they have the notion of Data Scale in their Axes Grid options where you can counteract the effects of transforms and elevates to make the axis labels correct again.

I know VisIt has the Scaling (x10^?) field in the Annotation pane, but this is always greyed out.

Any good options? I tried adding a label plot, but couldn't get it to fit correctly.

Hi James,

There really isn't a good way to do what you are after. I believe it is a really good feature and I will submit a ticket to add that as an enhancement. As a work around, you could turn off the labels (The check box right above the Scaling (x10^) field and then add 3D text annotation objects for each label. You would want to turn on Preserve orientation when view changes to keep the text oriented toward the viewer. There aren't any controls to set the font style for the 3D text, so you would need to modify the axis label styles to match the style of the 3D text.

Regarding the Scaling (x10^?) setting, if you turn off Auto scale label values in the General tab on the 3D tab, the field gets enabled. The purpose of that setting is to manually control the exponent that gets displayed in the axis label. For example, if your X range goes from 0 to 40,000, then the labels would be 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and the axis label would be "X Axis (x10^3)". VisIt chooses the exponent to be a multiple of 3. By manually setting it you could set it to something like 4 and then the values would be 0, 1, 2, 3, 4.

Sorry that we don't have a better solution.

Thanks! This is what I was afraid of. It would be a cool feature to have at some point though. I appreciate the confirmation and the workaround.

Also thanks for the tip on the Scaling (x10?). That was driving me crazy. It was enabled at one point and then somehow I disabled it and couldn't figure it out. The check box on the General tab was my issue with that not being enabled.
