We have discussed in the previous meeting that instead of solely focusing on the vertical resolution, we can play with several parameters to find out what are the several constraints that can limit DSW formation on OM2 (It would be useful for other models). I am listing here a few options for future analysis. This is not a priority right now, as it would require more simulations and computing time, but it is worth have a list here in case we want to run other experiments. Feel free to add new options (or comment on the issue so I can add it)

Possible constraints:

  • Vertical resolution
  • Coastal winds strength
  • Initial conditions (based on early results from Panan)
  • Sea ice settings ( Sea ice salinity, density, etc, based on these tests and early Panan results)
  • Surface temperature (is CM2 atm warmer than OM2 ? Could that impact Sea Ice formation?)
  • Salinity restoring ( Piston velocity, and target salinity field)

Update - Jun 2nd 2023________________
The next runs to do once we have additional hours are:

  • Rerun ctrl and 5mdz simulations without salinity restoring for 2 years ( TO which extent salinity restoring is controlling DSW formation?)
  • Continue the CM2atm run for the remaining 7 years (Currently 3 years run)
  • Rerun CTRL and 5mdz simulations with a stronger salinity restoring limit ( Currently 1psu, increase to 5 psu)

We can also definitely add salinity restoring to this list for ocean - sea ice models, see this comment from the panan development.
