Creating a node-red generated binary sensor / entity

I've been trying to figure out the best way to create an entity in configuration.yaml that is a binary_sensor that's tied to nothing in HASS itself. I then want to be able to push 'on' or 'off' from node red. Does somebody have an example of both how to create the binary_sensor? I don't think I want to use this because of the warning that those aren't fully functional sensors.

I think I figured it out, what I really want to create is an input_boolean:

then create a template sensor from that (if I want).
