Edmonton Air Quality Light

Edmonton used our IFTTT trigger to create a beautiful and informative light installation by local artist Dylan Toymaker. Follow this guide to learn how we did it.

Guide

Requirements

  • 3x LIFX smart bulbs (we use this one)
  • a light fixture to plug the bulbs into
  • a LIFX account (sign in here)
  • the LIFX mobile app (either Android or iOS)

1. Sync your bulbs to your LIFX mobile app

Follow the interactive guide here to get set up.

At this point, you should be able to control the colors of your bulbs from your mobile device. Now to get IFTTT controlling them!

2. Connect IFTTT to your LIFX account

Find the City of Edmonton's Albertan air quality applet. Click to turn it on. It will prompt you to connect to the LIFX account that you synced your LIFX bulbs to in the previous step.

Log into LIFX with your previously created account.

3. Configure the IFTTT applet

Select the city you want to monitor the air quality for.

important If you want to change the color of your LIFX bulb, you must set the Color field to Custom, see Advanced. This allows our IFTTT trigger to override the bulbs color.

Ensure you've selected the right smart LIFX bulb in the Which Lights? section and you should be good to go! Note that it may take up to a couple of hours to start receiving updates.
