Learning about and preparing for a user testing study

  1. UsabilityBasics.pdf - “3 Steps for Running Informal Usability Tests”, an overview on how to prepare for usability tests, useful to show to colleagues and as a preparation to review the documents below.
  2. Preparation - User Testing - Preparing for a user testing session and example of scripts to use when meeting with users
  3. Interview guidelines - General guidelines on how to best communicate with a user
  4. Correspondence Templates - Refer to these examples when drafting emails to introduce the user testing session(s), arrange a schedule and follow up after the session
  5. Testing Thursday Playbook - Example schedule for recurrent weekly user testing

Preparing for a specific project

  1. Task Worksheet - Document to define testing goals and testing tasks. Refer to the Example – Task Worksheet when working on this document.
  2. Script - Usability Testing - Script template for a specific user testing session and specific tasks
  3. Form - Usability Consent - Use this form when needed, especially with non-Harvard University members, or if the recorded material may be used for other purposes

Material for a specific project

  1. Correspondence Templates - Refer to these examples for the introduction, recruitment and follow up of users for the study
  2. Notes - User Testing Session - Populate this document either during the user testing session, or while reviewing notes and recording. This document will also be used to define the main outcome of the study with multiple users.
