Many places had unclear distinction between signed and unsigned types. This results in comparisons that are potentially wrong. This PR fixes all problems identifies when compiling with -Wsign-compare.
Where possible, types were changes to match the actual code. Only few places required explicit casting. The code was not functionally changed, although some places could use a caring hand. But that is for another PR.
