正如在STO-3G基组中那样,$2s$$2p$函数共享了指数(exponents),这是为了计算起来高效。给定了如上的函数形式后,我们不断改变收缩系数$d_{1s}$$d'_{2s}$$d''_{2s}$$d'_{2p}$$d''_{2p}$以及收缩指数$\alpha_{1s}$$\alpha'_{2s}$$\alpha''_{2s}$$\alpha'_{2p}$$\alpha''_{2p}$,直至相应的原子能量达到极小。STO-3G中,我们已知函数做最小二乘拟合,一般的收缩方案中,我们用一组预先指定的未收缩函数对原子做计算,然后得到一个收缩方式;而在4-31G中,我们先确定了函数形式[\eqref{eq:3.300}-\eqref{eq:3.304}],然后优化所有的收缩参数。换句话说,这个基组是经过先收缩、再优化得到的。如果用我们的一般记号,4-31G这种收缩方案可以写成$(8s4p/4s)[3s2p/2s]$。4-31G基组由三类函数构成:内壳层函数、靠内的价层函数、靠外的价层函数。它们分别由4、3、1个原初函数收缩而来。
