Hi everyone, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the results from my analysis of the materials provided by Kyle:

The Social and Environmental Determinants of Health (SEDH) datasets play an integral role in comprehending and reducing suicide risk.

These datasets, encompassing key community dataset categories such as economic distress (ED), social capital and connectedness (SCC), access to lethal means (LMA), healthcare quality and accessibility (HQ&A), and environmental health factors (EDH), are vital in supporting the hypothesis that elements like socioeconomic instability and inadequate healthcare access elevate the risk of suicide. This collaborative effort with the Veterans Health Administration is focused on streamlining data collection and analysis, thereby deepening our understanding of how various social determinants affect mental health, with a particular emphasis on suicide risk.

This endeavor is in line with employing SDOH-related terminology to broaden our collective understanding in this field and to refine the GIS Vocabulary package's structure.

The hypothesized linkages, which warrant further investigation and could be transformed into practical use cases, are as follows:

  1. The combination of socioeconomic instability, reduced social support, and educational disparities significantly raises the risk of suicide, highlighting the necessity for targeted mental health interventions in susceptible groups.
  2. Environmental pressures, such as ongoing exposure to violence and persistent poverty, are closely linked with increased suicide rates, underscoring the need to foster safer and more nurturing community settings.
  3. Restricted access to mental health services, coupled with the stigma attached to mental health issues, intensifies the risk of suicide, pointing to the urgent need for more accessible healthcare services and comprehensive public awareness initiatives.

We are open to further thoughts on this matter and would appreciate any additional insights you might have.

To aid in our collaborative review, I have attached an Excel file containing the initial mapping of SEDH terms to the SDOH vocabulary for the working group's consideration.
