Different kinds of spatial data format have slightly different ways of loading in.

Shapefiles (.shp) come with a number of auxilary files such as .dbf, .dbx etc. These files do not need to be dropped into QGIS; only the .shp needs to be. However, a shapefile's auxilary files should always be kept with it, so it's usually a good idea to have each set of files in their own folder rather than loosely mixed. We'll now load in the 'Natural_neighbourhoods.shp' file into our QGIS project. Drag and drop the shapefile (.shp) into QGIS. The layer will be displayed in both the layers panel AND the main window. We can still see the attribute table, however, using the same method as for the delimited layer.

A geodatabase (.gdb) and a geopackage (.gpkg) are similar formats. Both are essentially specialised folders which contain both spatial data and their auxiliary information in one place. Dragging and dropping in a geodatabase or geopackage will do one of two things, depending on contents. If there is only a single layer in the file, it will be loaded straight in. Otherwise, a dialog will appear asking which layers we would like to import and if we would like them to be grouped together.
