Home Automation

It appears that there may finally be an industry standard for IoT (Internet of Things). Many companies have decided to standardize on Matter and Thread. The hope is that by doing this that more devices will be able to interoperate with each other easier and allow local control as well. Both standards are suppose to be open and available without a patent license and have open source versions of them.

One of my favorite companies, Tuya, has announced that they are going to support Matter as well. They produce many IoT products for other companies to rebrand as their own.

Matter

Matter Project, formerly Project Connected Home over IP (CHIP), is a proprietary, royalty-free home automation connectivity standard. Matter is also open source as well.

Thread

Thread is an IPv6-based, low-power mesh networking technology for Internet of things (IoT) products, intended to be secure and future-proof. The Thread protocol specification is available at no cost; however, this requires agreement and continued adherence to an End-User License Agreement (EULA), which states that "Membership in Thread Group is necessary to implement, practice, and ship Thread technology and Thread Group specifications."

Open Thread is an open source version of Thread with source code available.

Security Sensors

Security sensors can be used to monitor if a widow or door is open or closed. There are also motion sensors that will detect if there is motion in an area being monitored and signal when it detects motion.

Smart Humidity Detector

It will tell you what the humidity of the air is in the area being monitored. These are good for monitoring the humidity in a baby room for example and then take action. Another common use is to monitor the humidity in the bathroom and detect that a shower was taken and turn on the ceiling fan to remove humidity in the bathroom.

Smart Cameras

A smart camera is a machine vision system which, in addition to image capture circuitry, is capable of extracting application-specific information from the captured images, along with generating event descriptions or making decisions that are used in an intelligent and automated system.

Smart Locks

A smart lock is an electromechanical lock which is designed to perform locking and unlocking operations on a door when it receives such instructions from an authorized device using a wireless protocol and a cryptographic key to execute the authorization process.

Smart Lights

A smart light is a light that can be turned on and off without using a light switch. They can also be programmed to change colors as well.

Smart Light Switches

Smart light switches can be turned on and off without actually needing to physically interact the switch.

Smart Speakers

A smart speaker is a type of loudspeaker and voice command device with an integrated virtual assistant that offers interactive actions and hands-free activation with the help of an "activation word". Some smart speakers also include a screen to show the user a visual response.

Smart Water Leak

A device that will detect if water is leaking then send an alert that it detected water.
