Be more Descriptive in Test Cases results

Throughout the test cases, the word "appropriate" was used for example "appropriate response" or "appropriate error" For someone new to the system, what does appropriate define? How do you know that the response is approproriate. This should be described in more detail to get a better understanding of what a needed response would look like in the system, or what an appropriate error is defined as for that specific test case/component of the system.
