Test on a battery of positions

Even if the modern chess engines are stronger and stronger, yet there are some difficult (hard) positions for them. So, we collected a battery of (258) positions, classified based on Shashin's theory with a private application:

  • 92 of Hard Tal/tactical type
  • 35 of Middle Tal/tactical type
  • 16 of Small Tal/tactical type
  • 21 of Tal-Capablanca/caos type
  • 64 of Capablanca/strategic type
  • 4 of Capablanca-Petrosian/caos type
  • 18 of Small Petrosian/defensive type
  • 6 of Middle Petrosian/defensive type
  • 4 of Hard Petrosian/defensive type

In this manner,

  1. if the test by the match is even, we can use this to compare the two engines strength
  2. even not considering the match, the number and % of resolved positions, total and for each type, can give us a lot of informations about an engine style. In particular, for ShashChess, we can test the style's options (Tal, Capablanca, Petrosian or mixed).
