This PR updates the root README.md file to bring it in line with the requirements and design outlined in issue #186, including a modern, comprehensive onboarding section, accurate environment/documentation, monorepo structure overview, detailed environment variable documentation, and up-to-date CI/CD and deployment details. All acceptance criteria from the ticket have been addressed.
