WIP, but seems to be working. Sharing in case anyone is interested before it's done. I'm not at all certain that I've got all of the branchless plumbing set up correctly yet, but the tests do pass and it's been behaving itself in real usage. See #180.

This will be used to circumvent the "autocheckout" setting in `git split` (in
the next commit), so that we can preserve the current detached/attached state.

FIXME is this really needed? Maybe we don't need to force-re-checkout?
