It entered CNFC [incubation](https://www.cncf.io/blog/2024/09/17/artifact-hub-becomes-a-cncf-incubating-project/) on 2024-09-27. The ArtifactHub [roadmap](https://github.com/artifacthub/hub/blob/master/ROADMAP.md) outlines the direction of the project, which includes adding "support for more Cloud Native artifacts from CNCF projects."
This RFC proposes that we integrate and augment our bespoke registry service
with [ArtifactHub.io](https://artifacthub.io/). This RFC does not stipulate that we _remove_ or _replace_ our existing
registry. ArtifactHub.io is a public instance of the [ArtifactHub](https://github.com/artifacthub/hub) project, and we
will not be running our own instance of the _ArtifactHub project_.

This RFC proposes we phase out our bespoke registry service and replace it with ArtifactHub. This includes working with the ArtifactHub team to support two new artifacts: CNB Component Buildpacks & CNB Builders.
This is an augmentation, not a replacement. It will not affect how Images are built--this is a tool for artifact
discoverability for human consumption.

The Buildpack Registry is lacking in functionality. We can invest in enhancing our own implementation that will support only our project, or we could adapt and adopt a project that concentrates this effort and will benefit from a wider pool of contributors.
Buildpacks, Builders, and Run Images should be easily discoverable to make them more usable and approachable. Today, the
centralized [buildpacks registry](https://registry.buildpacks.io/) service is our solution to discoverability. This
registry service is a very important tool, but there is room for improvement.

With (not insignificant) effort on our part, we could gain a lot of benefits from cooperating with ArtifactHub. For instance, ArtifactHub would provide us with a more extensive API, we can have data that signals to consumers which buildpacks are verified or officially supported by organizations, etc. We could have better navigation of Builders to Buildpacks and even more metadata that would support adoption and signal CNB project maturity.
The mission of CNB is to enable **building**. Making artifacts discoverable is not necessarily part of the core mission,
but it is a core supporting feature. Meanwhile, OCI artifact discoverability **is the core mission** of ArtifactHub.io.
We should consider using this "off the shelf" product instead of enhancing our own registry. In this way, we can support
the CNCF community while gaining a lot of features and dedicated user experience enhancements. We will benefit from
contributors dedicated to artifact discoverability.
