I did tested on my fork, it's a bit annoying as API since it's easy to misuse, but checks are also easy to do wrong.
One one side this likely needs to be iterated on, on the other it's probably easier to just start using this and find later the patterns that do make sense.
There are notes that those settings are unstable, meant for internal use only, and easy to misuse.
