In the mean time you can read the paper describing dccrg (unofficial version) and afterwards continue by reading the Game of life page on Wikipedia and staring at its example implementation using dccrg in the repository. This program can run on more than one shared memory machine by using MPI which in practice means that tens of thousands of cores can be used for computation.
