The new Variant API was causing various issues. Due to its lazy nature it was not possible to filter out kapt task. The change also adds some more tests for future resilience (cherry picked from commit a62dfe5)

While the test task should use this directory as a working directory, it is not an input to the task. Without this change, the two test tasks are never up-to-date for from the build cache. (cherry picked from commit 1c22887)
