The RIOT-OS port for ESP8266 has been finished and is merged into the RIOT master.
For information about the current status of the port, see ESP8266 port.
If you would like to try, just clone the repository. Detailed instructions on installation and usage can be found in cpu/esp8266/README.md. For simplicity, a precompiled toolchain from RIOT-Xtensa-ESP8266-toolchain can be used.
