Datamatch Bootcamp Week 3 Material (6/14/2020)

Hi all,

Welcome back to Datamatch's Web Bootcamp Week 3! We are almost halfway through. Week 3's material is much more conceptually focused, so you probably won't be coding as much as week 2's material. Link to Week 3 material: https://github.com/harvard-datamatch/bootcamp/wiki/Bootcamp-Week-3:-React-Router-&-React%E2%80%93Redux%E2%80%93Firebase

Couple reminders:

  1. Office hours - As usual, I've set office hours for this week already in this calendar. Let me know if all the times don't work for you, and I'm sure we can work something out.

  2. Week 2 material - soft deadline is Monday night (whatever timezone you are in). Make sure to submit the form, so I can take a look at your work! This is a soft deadline (and is really just to help keep me accountable with getting material out for the next week). However, just do let me know if you'll need more time, so I can remember to look through your submission.

I will be releasing Week 2 solutions tomorrow after the soft deadline.

As usual, feel free to email/Slack me if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions!

Best, Joshua

P.S. if you want to be removed from this mailing list, just let me know!

Datamatch Bootcamp Week 2 Material (6/7/2020)

Hi all,

Welcome back to Datamatch's Web Bootcamp Week 2! I'm super excited to start building our Quizlet-like flashcards application and solidifying our React knowledge. Not to give anything away, but the material this week is much more open-ended and hopefully more stimulating than copy+pasting from a tutorial. Because it is more open-ended, you may want to start on the material early so you have enough time to ask questions.

Couple reminders:

  1. Slack - join the slack! Introduce yourself, get to know other bootcampers, and ask questions. I've also created a #week2 channel, where people can bounce ideas off each other about the many optional, additional tasks for this week's material.

  2. Office hours - I anticipate this week's material to be more difficult. So, I've set office hours for this week already in this calendar. Let me know if all the times don't work for you, and I'm sure we can work something out.

  3. Week 1 material - soft deadline is Monday night (whatever timezone you are in). Make sure to submit the form, so I can take a look at your work! This is a soft deadline (and is really just to help keep me accountable with getting material out for the next week). However, just do let me know if you'll need more time, so I can remember to look through your submission.

As usual, feel free to email/Slack me if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions!

Best, Joshua

I failed to link the material, but here it is! https://github.com/harvard-datamatch/bootcamp/wiki/Bootcamp-Week-2:-More-React

In general, the material can be found on the wiki: https://github.com/harvard-datamatch/bootcamp/wiki, with the different pages on the right sidebar.

Official Start to Datamatch Web Bootcamp! (6/1/2020)

Hi all,

I failed to say that office hours are in Pacific time zone (LA timezone). The easiest way to look at the calendar is to just add it to your calendar (in the bottom-right corner, the plus sign). Sorry for the inconvenience and confusion!

Best, Joshua

Hi all,

Hope your summer has been well, and happy July! Datamatch's bootcamp has officially started this week 🎉 . The first week's material has been posted already: https://github.com/harvard-datamatch/bootcamp/wiki/Bootcamp-Week-1:-The-basics

Two exciting, new things to introduce:

  1. Office Hours! Need some help debugging? Stumped on how to proceed on an implementation? Come out to one of the office hours to get help, ask questions, or just hangout! The office hours time can be found on this calendar: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=college.harvard.edu_q52q8udlj9htd7jei4273m8eqc%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America%2FLos_Angeles. Each event has a Zoom link, which will be activated close to the meeting time. Let me know if you can't make any of the office hours (I have a slot every day of 1-2 hours).

  2. Slack - I want to build a community where people can share issues/errors communally and help each other out. It's also a place to hangout and talk about cool projects you're working on over the summer, etc. You can join via this link: https://join.slack.com/t/datamatchwebbootcamp/shared_invite/zt-ev1i2t6s-cT6inQ5QM7xZ9TgASbvbSQ. Introduce yourself, I really want to get to know each one of you!

Finally, if you missed an email or are not sure if you missed an email, I created an email archive on the bootcamp GitHub, so you can always find previous emails: https://github.com/harvard-datamatch/bootcamp/wiki/Email-Archives

Best, Joshua

Datamatch Web Bootcamp Update/Week 1 material (5/26/2020)

Hi all!

Thank you for your interest in Datamatch's Web Bootcamp! I'm Joshua, the person who will be running this bootcamp. I'm overwhelmed by the amount of interest and also super delighted to see people excited to learn about React and Firebase over the summer. After taking into account your suggestions, I've decided that the bootcamp will be 6 weeks long with a 5 hour/week commitment starting June 1st. Here are some clarifications to some common questions I got:

So will we be building our own projects as part of the weekly tasks or rebuilding Datamatch? Unfortunately Datamatch took over 2-3 months to build with a full team, so we will not be doing that :( However, you will be building your own individual projects as part of the weekly tasks that build upon each other to create a flashcards app, like Quizlet.

I have other commitments for the summer. Can I still participate? The answer is yes! All of the material is recorded, nothing is done live. So, this whole bootcamp can really be done on your own time. I will try to make sure I run multiple office hours per week to suit the different time zones.

How will the bootcamp be structured i.e. will all the material directly be released or will it be released on a weekly basis? Material will likely be released on a weekly basis. I want to take your feedback into account before creating material, and the material is constantly being updated and changed, so I might not post the material until that week. However, some weeks might be more planned out and material will be ready ahead of time!

What if I cannot meet the weekly deadlines? That is a-okay! Just let me know, deadlines are very flexible. And as remarked above, everything is recorded, so the material can be done on your own time and will be there for the rest of the summer.

Okay, that was a lot. But the important thing is: Week 1 material is posted!! You can find the material here: https://github.com/harvard-datamatch/bootcamp/wiki/Bootcamp-Week-1:-The-basics

This week is mostly a React tutorial; the last part of the tutorial is optional (because the tutorial is long), but I highly recommend it because it will definitely help you deepen your understanding of React and because there's extra time to start :)

Please let me know if you have any questions/comments, and I'm excited to officially start next week!

Best, Joshua
