Performance Testing Using JMeter
Performance testing of Helidon using Apache ab with keep-alive has problems due to a bug in ab related to chunked encoding. Without keep-alive enabled, it works as expected but a test run can easily run out of connections (TIME_WAIT), thus the use of Apache JMeter is recommended.
At the time of writing JMeter 5.X is available, but we found it to be somewhat unstable, so this writeup uses the JMeter 3.X for testing purposes. JMeter has two modes: UI and CLI. UI mode is recommended for making changes to the configuration file (see below) and CLI is recommended for actual testing. JMeter downloads are available here.
- Starting JMeter in UI mode:
>> jmeter &
Once started you can open and edit configuration files. You can also test your changes by running the benchmark using the UI, but the CLI is preferred for actual performance testing.
- Running JMeter using the configuration file below:
>> jmeter -n -t helidon.jmx
Copy and paste the text below into a file named helidon.jmx
as shown in the examples above. Note that the URL accessed by this configuration is http://localhost:8080/greet/santiago
. Of particular interest are the properties: LoopController.loops
and ThreadGroup.num_threads
that control the number of iterations and client threads, respectively.
