Context

Primal Glow [Communications] (past & current websites) is a consultancy led by Kim Allen (LinkedIn) that:

...offers support and guidance around all aspects of capacity building from an opportunities management perspective. We help teams think strategically and engage in meaningful conversations that allow for reflection and inquiry that lead to change.

They were connected with patcon and Hypha via Louise Kent (LinkedIn), the Direct of Member Experience wat Girl Guides of Canada, after Louise had spoken at a Civic Tech Toronto hacknight. Louise referred Kim to patcon (who was doing speaker booking for Civic Tech Toronto), so that she could present the final report on a funded research project that Primal Glow had been doing for the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres (OCRCC). The goal was to better understand how crisis centre were using technology on the frontline The research phase had concluded, and Primal Glow was now looking to partner with developers who could enter into a new build phase, during which a crisis helpdesk platform would be built.

Kim attended the hacknight with several stakeholders from the OCRCC. After her presentation, patcon co-facilitated a session with Kim, and both Kim and the OCRCC stakeholders seemed excited about the session and the ongoing trajectory of engagement (part of regular Civic Tech Toronto hacknight support, not Hypha), which included:

  • patcon started laying out the initiative as an open project, including a single-point-of-entry Quicklink Document
  • patcon created a chat room on Civic Tech Toronto's Slack team (see quicklinks)
  • a key stakeholder with OCRCC expressed interest and alignment of coalition with co-operative ideals of Hypha
  • patcon followed up with Kim the next week, based on her expressed interest in Hypha
  • patcon expressed interest in whether helpdesk might be possible to initiate and run as a #platformcoop model organization

After some discussion and followup, members of Hypha met with members of the Inclusive Design Research Centre (IDRC), so as to relay information. Excitement within that group lead to Hypha connecting IDRC with Primal Glow. The stated intention was not for IDRC to do the development work, but to offer guidance in Primal Glow's technical Request For Proposal (RFP) process, and ongoing guidance on managing a technical and design team.

Hypha will be invited to apply for the future RFP process ($75,000 contract, deadline before Feb 2020), but will not be given special privileges in the process aside from trust earned during other engagements.

During the prior conversations, Kim expressed interest in hiring patcon through Hypha. The role would be to act as a general digital coach for Primal Glow's consultancy. This may included support in the lead-up to contracting the team that will eventually build the crisis helpdesk platform.
