looks to me like you are hosting the images.

for more flexibility and less conflict I recommend that you turn the lines you have added to fast.json into a submenu and only add a link to the submenu, hosted with the images, in fast.json

look at how rpi themselves add ubuntu and other submenus for an example.

This is a great recommendation. Most newcomers don't want more than 3-or-so choices, as they're already overwhelmed by far too many IT/curatorial "analysis paralysis" choices already. The 3 core image choices that @georgejhunt selected ~2 years ago remain excellent in my opinion: https://github.com/iiab/iiab/wiki/Raspberry-Pi-Images:-Summary#iiab-image-choices

Some tinkerers however do want more experimental OS's like MATE (etc) and they should have that choice, if the product quality is high (and can be maintained high). Better yet if Ubuntu MATE happens to develop a genuine community on Raspberry Pi in the long-term — respected & honored by Raspberry Pi Foundation & Ubuntu for their contributions 👍
