SimpleMDE is quite a nice markdown editor, but the way it works is not compatible with spell checkers browser extensions like the great LanguageTool. Also, SimpleMDE does not seem to be maintained anymore (and seems to get annoying dependencies as node-sass that does not seem to be compatible with node 16+).
So I tried two other editors:
And added the ability to switch between editors to get the most of it (also with textarea) ; you may for instance keep using SimpleMDE for editing, and switch to textarea just the time to do the spellcheck with LanguageTool or the browser extension you use.
I am aware this PR cannot be merged as is (notably because of deactivating tests, as it requires a lot of work to update) but let me know if you are interested in this feature and I may help to get something mergeable in the direction you want.
