The Library, Archives, and Museum (LAM) industries depend on the development, use, and interoperation of descriptive and administrative metadata schemas to assist in the description, indexing, and retrieval of the items in their collections. The variegated nature of the larger information landscape has entailed that many of these standards and vocabularies do not perfectly align and that some are difficult to locate, differentiate, and interoperate.
The primary means of remedying this problem to date has been the creation of “crosswalks” which relate differing standards to each other in static, tabular form. The intention of the first part of the project is to provide a unified interface as a responsive reference and extensible library for other projects.
The goal of the second is to provide a tool for converting and combining records described using differing schemas/standards, enhancing the durability, interoperability, flexibility, and availability of digital records, along with fostering a convergence of workflows between the traditionally siloed institutions.
