This backend provides a bridge between the Evolution Data Server (EDS) and the
Telepathy (TP) roster.

Expected behaviour
======== =========

Getting the contacts from the book:
~~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~
The client should open the book once the account has been created by TP
Mission Control. Any attempts to open the book with an invalid account name
will result in an error immediately.
The format of the URL used for the backend is of the form:
tp://<MC account unique name>
The formatting of this string varies from MC version to MC version but you
might expect it to look like either 'gtalk0' or
'gabble/jabber/user_40host_2ecom0'
Once opened the client should create a book view on the book. And connect to
the contacts-added, contacts-changed, contacts-removed and sequence-complete
signals.
If the account is offline and and the account has never been online then the
book view will contain no items. If the account has previously been online
then the book view will be populated with a set of contacts that have been
cached from when the account was last online.
When the account goes online the book view is updated to reflect any changes
to the contacts that are relevant now that we are online. It is important to
note that this behaviour of the book view being populated with contacts from
the database cache and then updated based on the TP roster still occurs even
if the account is online when the book is opened. Hence it is important to
connect to the contacts-changed signal.
The reconciliation process that updates the internal state of the backend to
match that of the roster (whilst taking into account pending changes) applies
each time the account goes online. This process involves retrieving the
contacts from the roster and then iterating over all the contacts in the
roster. If the contact already exists in the internal representation and the
database then the contact is updated to match that received from the roster.
With the exception that any fields that were changed when the account was
offline will not be touched. These changes will be applied after this stage of
the reconciliation process. Any new contacts that appear in the roster will be
created and persisted in the cache.
To deal with contacts that have been deleted from the roster from outside each
contact is marked with a flag when it is imported from the database. This flag
is then removed when it is 'seen' i.e. a matching contact is found in the
roster. Any contacts that remain with this flag are those that should be
removed from the database.
Making changes to a contact
~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~ ~~ ~ ~~~~~~~

The client can modify contacts using the usual EBook e_book_add_contact
function. In general the backend implementation of this functionality does not
return an error instead it attempts to apply the changes to the contact on a
best effort basis.
The function e_book_commit_contact should be avoided to modify contacts as
it's racy. e_book_add_contact will take care of adding the contact if it
doesn't exist or to update it if it already exists.

The backend will parse the contact provided by the client and change as many
of the writeable fields as a possible. In order to avoid undesirable results
the client should always ensure it bases the updated contact on the most
recent version it can. If it wishes to avoid accidentally changing extra
fields then it should strip those fields from the contact.

In general the contact should have a VCARD format that closely matches the
one described below. Some points to note:

* If a given field is included multiple times then which is used is undefined.
  Therefore please ensure that you include fields at most once.
* Any extra field parameters/types will be ignored.

If the contact is successfully updated a signal may be emitted from all
EBookViews. The version of the contact used in this case is derived from the
internal representation used by the backend. Thus it will have duplicate
fields, excess fields and extra type and parameter details stripped.

It is expected that all all contact parameters are in UTF-8. Other formats are
not supported and the client should ensure it converts to UTF-8.

In some cases it may not be possible to change a particular field on the
contact due to server-side restrictions. In this case the change will be
attempted and such a change will be reflected in version of the contact
maintained in the internal structures and database. However when the account
next goes online the change will be lost and value will be restored to the
version used on the roster. The reason for this is that we get no direct
feedback that a given operation failed or succeeded. We do get a notification
from the TP CM when a change has been applied however this point at which
this happens is indeterminate.

Creating a new contact
~~~~~~~~ ~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~
The client can add contacts using the EBook e_book_add_contact function.
Once the contact is created the contacts-added signal will be emitted on the
EBookView and the contact that it provides will have contain the UID for the
newly created contact. If the account is online the contact will be added
immediately
You must provide a field for the TP CM username. Failing to do so will raise
an error. It is also advisable for the client to set X-TELEPATHY-PUBLISHED and
X-TELEPATHY-SUBSCRIBED to yes.
Depending on the server configuration it may not be possible to add contacts
to the roster. In which case the attempt will be made when the client goes
online and reflected in the EBookView.
If the addition of the new contact fails, for instance because the provided
contact ID is invalid, the parameter X-OSSO-VALID of the protocol specific
vcard field (for instance X-JABBER) will be set to "no". This is needed as the
feedback on the validity of the contact ID can only be given after going
online.
Deleting a contact
~~~~~~~~ ~ ~~~~~~~

A client can delete a contact using the usual e_book_remove_contact function
which simply takes the UID for the contact to delete. Provided that the UID is
valid the backend will ordinarily return that the contact has been
successfully deleted and a signal will original from the EBookView. If the
account is online then the backend will attempt to delete the contact by
removing it from all the contact lists on the CM that is is a member of
otherwise the contact will be scheduled for deletion in the database to be
applied when the client next goes online.

Usually deleting a roster contact is wanted only if there are no master
contacts attached to it, but checking this condition and then removing the
contact is racy. To avoid this "if-unused" can be appended to the roster UID
separated by a ";":

       gabble/jabber/foo_40bar_2eorg0-someone_40example_2ecom0;if-unused

When requesting removal of this contact it will be removed only if no master
contacts are attached to the contact for [email protected].
For more details see "Atomic master UID list changes".

In some cases, depending on the server configuration, it may not be possible
to delete a given contact. In this case the deletion will be attempted and
will be reflected in the book view. However when the account next goes online
the deleted contact will be added back into the backend. The reason for this
is that we get no direct feedback that a given operation failed or succeeded
until we go online.

VCARD format
~~~~~ ~~~~~~
An example of the VCARD is below:
BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
PHOTO;VALUE=URI:file:///home/user/.osso-abook/avatars/40b817e31d1dd6af33fbc6ed8916a1c94a205e57
X-TELEPATHY-CAPABILITIES:text;voice;video
X-TELEPATHY-PRESENCE:available;
X-TELEPATHY-BLOCKED:no
X-TELEPATHY-PUBLISHED:yes
X-TELEPATHY-SUBSCRIBED:yes
X-TELEPATHY-HANDLE:5
NICKNAME:Joe Bloggs
X-JABBER;X-OSSO-VALID=yes;TYPE=jabber:[email protected]
UID:gabble/jabber/[email protected]
END:VCARD
Considering the fields in detail:
PHOTO;VALUE=URI:file://<some local uri>
This field is read only. It will be present if the account is offline iff. the
avatar token is known and the avatar has been successfully downloaded to the
avatar cached.
X-TELEPATHY-CAPABILITIES:{text,voice,video}
This field is read only. It will be present iff. the account is online and at
least one of the capabilities is available. The field is multi-valued and
contain any subset of {text, voice, video}.
X-TELEPATHY-BLOCKED: [yes, no, local-pending, remote-pending]
This field is writeable and always present. It can be set when the account is
online or offline. It's value maps to the contact's handle's state on the
'deny' TP contact list (representing contacts who are denied the ability to
contact us). When set whilst the account is online the change is applied to
the TP roster immediately, when offline the change is cached in the database
to be applied when the account next goes online. Any attempt to set an invalid
value will result in no change being made.
Note that not all the IM protocols and servers support blocking contacts.
X-TELEPATHY-PUBLISHED: [yes, no, local-pending, remote-pending]
This field is writeable and always present. It can be set when the account is
online or offline. It's value maps to the contact's handle's state on the
'publish' TP contact list (representing contacts who can see our presence).
When set whilst the account is online the change is applied to the TP roster
immediately, when offline the change is cached in the database to be applied
when the account next goes online. Any attempt to set an invalid value will
result in no change being made.
X-TELEPATHY-SUBSCRIBED: [yes, no, local-pending, remote-pending]
This field is writeable and always present. It can be set when the account is
online or offline. It's value maps to the contact's handle's state on the
'subscribe' TP contact list (representing contacts whose presence we can see).
When set whilst the account is online the change is applied to the TP roster
immediately, when offline the change is cached in the database to be applied
when the account next goes online. Any attempt to set an invalid value will
result in no change being made.
NOTE: When changing the above three fields you are only permitted to set the
state to 'yes' or 'no'. The other values are the result of transitions between
these two states.
X-TELEPATHY-HANDLE: n
This field is read only and will be present iff. the account is online. It
represents the handle for the contact on the TP CM.
You should never cache this value as it will change if the account goes
offline and then online again.
X-OSSO-MASTER-UID: <string>
This field is writeable and will be present if the value is set. It stores the
UID for a contact in the main address book with which this contact can be
associated with. The backend will persist the value of this field so that a
client can maintain some kind of relationship between contacts across
different backends.
NICKNAME: <string>
This field is read only. Its value maps to the contact's alias. It's present
only if the contact's alias is set on the server.
e.g. X-JABBER: <string>
This field is CM specific. It's writeable at creation time only and will
always be present. It represents the contact's username on the TP roster. It
may occasionally be changed by the backend since when the contact is created
the username may be normalised to a different value to that provided by the
creating client.
The parameter X-OSSO-VALID will be set to no to report asynchronously errors
while creating the contact on the server.
The parameter TYPE is set to the name of the mission control profile of the
account so, for instance, the UI can show a different icon for plain jabber
contacts and for gtalk ones.
UID: <string>
This is field is read only and always present. It is created when the contact
is first added to the backend and it is derived from the username for the
contact (see above.) This field is important as it is used to determine which
contact a given VCARD supplied to the backend is supposed to represent.
Design notes
Database cache
~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~

The cache is maintained in an sqlite3 database in
$HOME/.osso-abook/db/tp-cache/<MC account unique name>

This cache is updated by indirect changes to the backend coming from the
TP roster and also used to store changes requested by the user. In the former
the writes are queued in the backend to try and minimise the frequency of
database updates with the intention of minimising power consumption.

In the latter updates are persisted into the database to allow changes whilst
the account is offline.

Atomic master UID list changes
~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~~~~
The master UID list of contacts can be modified atomically. To implement this
feature the functions for adding and removing contacts behave slightly
differently than usual.
New master UIDs can be added by adding a new contacts to the book:
       VCARD:BEGIN
       X-JABBER:[email protected]
       MASTER-UID:87
       VCARD:END
If that contact matches an existing contact, the master UID lists of the new
and the existing contact are merged. Book views will emit "contacts-update"
signals instead of "contacts-added" in that case.
Master UIDs can be removed by appending the master UIDs to remove to the
IM contact's UID:
       gabble/jabber/foo_40bar_2eorg0-someone_40example_2ecom0;87;88
When requesting removal of this contact the master UIDs 87 and 88 will be
removed from the contact for [email protected]. The contact itself only is
removed when no master UIDs are left.
It's possible to remove a master UID without also removing the roster contact
in case no other master UIDs are left. This is done by appending "preserve" to
the list of master UIDs to remove:
       gabble/jabber/foo_40bar_2eorg0-someone_40example_2ecom0;42;preserve
When requesting removal of this contact the master UID 42 will be removed from
the contact for [email protected]. The contact itself will not be removed,
even if no master UIDs are left.
