Although other methods have been discovered for logging the Steam user into Gnome for some use cases (using the desktop Steam client), those methods usually require changes to system files and quite a few steps in order to switch between sessions. After some tinkering, I think that I have found a bit more useful and easier method for allowing the steam user to use Gnome when needed and switch back to the SteamOS session when finished.
The method requires the use of two custom scripts that will be added as non-Steam apps. One script will be used to switch to Gnome (switch-to-gnome) and the other will be used to switch back to the SteamOS session (switch-to-steamos).
- switch-to-gnome: Used to set the default session to Gnome and kill steam in order to end the current session.
- switch-to-steamos: Used to set the default session to SteamOS, kill steam, and then log the steam user out of Gnome in order to end the current session.
