This is based on this YouTube video, thanks Baxtexx for that.
(This has only been tested with an empty library, please make sure everything is backed up before you change anything)
- Create a folder for your attachments in Dropbox, sync to your machine
- Install Zotero and the addon ZotFile
- In Zotero: Edit > Preferences > "Sync" tab. Sign up with the Zotero account, then disable the file sync (two check boxes in the config window, at the bottom)
- Switch to the "Advanced" tab, then the sub-tab "Files and Folders". Set the Dropbox folder as "Linked Attachment Base Directory"
- Close with OK
- Go to Tools > ZotFile Preferences. Under "Location of Files", select "Custom Location" and again select the Dropbox folder
- Close with OK. Done!
Possible Problems:
- Drag&drop files won't end up in Dropbox. Select items, right click, Manage Attachments > Rename Attachments to move them there. Source
