Reflect and Review
At the end of each session there is a time for 'Reflect and Review'. This page gives some guidance for generic things you can do in that section.
Depending on how long your session is scheduled to run for (the default is 45 minutes) you may have anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes for Reflect and Review. The idea is to perform some lightweight assessment of what learners know, understand and can do as a result of the session. After all, you want to ensure you've been effective!
Learning happens more quickly and intentionally when learners reflect on what they've learned. Ways in which you can encourage this to happen are:
- Ask learners to explain times when they had difficulties. How did they become 'unstuck'? What strategies did they use? (e.g. ask a friend, search for help, trial-and-error)
- Think, Pair, Share. Learners tell someone nearby one thing they've learned in the session. That pair then tells another pair what they've learned. The four then feed back to the whole group.
- Use screencapture software and ask learners to narrate what they did in the session to provide a 1-minute overview for the rest of the group. Show a couple of these at the next session as a recap.
Sometimes, learning activities can seem a little random and disconnected. They can make more sense when you review learning at the end of the session. Ways in which you can encourage this are:
- Ask the same question(s) at the start and the end of the session. If the answers are deeper and show more understanding the second time around, then learning has taken place.
- Review the learning objectives from the session. Have we met them? How have we done that?
- Prepare a quiz to ask at the end of the session. This could be multiple choice and/or it could be done individually, in pairs, or in teams.
