A modern adaptation of a timeless classic. A Doll’s house explores one woman’s escape from patriarchal oppression. When Nora’s life as she knows it is brought into question on Christmas Day, Nora is forced to make a choice that will affect her life as she knows it. Torvald and Nora Helmer, who’ve had some financial struggles, are delighted because Torvald has received a major promotion at work. But Nora, behind her lightheartedness and occasionally juvenile behaviour- encouraged, always, by her husband who calls her diminutive, vaguely insulting names- is hiding a major secret. She borrowed a substantial sum of money a few years ago to finance a trip to Italy to help Torvald recover from a major illness. But now she is threatened to reveal the truth, and this becomes increasingly problematic especially when it is discovered that an illegal forgery is involved...

date: 2022-12-19
rating: 4.5/5
quote: "An interesting feature I was fond of was how the radio essentially had its own role to play. The radio is always playing, predominantly joyful carols that dichotomised Charlotte’s consistent despair, rendering her almost alien to the passing of time and outside world as she is unable to find happiness in ‘the most wonderful time of the year’."

---

Charlotte and Thomas are celebrating their first Christmas without their son, Alfred. The couple are struggling to cope with the loss of their child especially during this festive season. The play takes place in 1950s England, a time where communication and expressing emotions was not a cultural priority. The standards of Mid-Century, post-war England furthers the couple’s problems because they are not talking about their differing mourning processes or dealing with their grief together. The play is set over the course of a day from the morning of the 24th of December to midnight, when it officially becomes Christmas. Charlotte and Thomas are hosting a Christmas Eve meal for their friends: Nora and William. This joyous meal turns sour as the couple’s underlying tension is finally brought to the surface.

quote: "Aristotle (Alessia Lowcock) and Socrates (Tommy Allwright) had brilliant onstage chemistry, and complemented each other amazingly."

Two of the most influential thinkers in the history of philosophy and science like you’ve never heard of them before…completely and utterly devoid of ideas. Aristotle and Socrates find themselves in a rut. History would suggest that they had plenty to think about. Not today. Not according to this play. In their desperation to come up with any new ideas, the pair enlist the help of Ancient Greek heavyweights who, as it turns out, may just derail them further. Join the pair in their rut and discover if they will ever live up to their legacy of thinking lots and lots about lots of things and making other people think lots about lots, lots.
