1. Building Nim projects on commercial CI systems

Building your code on CI is useful to check regressions against the master and devel branches of Nim. Same for your code documentation.

There are 3 most common ways to install Nim:

  • Pulling the Debian packages: fastest and most secure; requires keeping the .deb file URL up to date

  • Using a Docker image: slower but requires little maintenance

  • Using choosenim: slow when compiling Nim from sources

2. GitHub Actions

For building a nimble application with an executable named hello_world. The built executable will be available in the release artifact. See nim-hello-world for an example project.

2.1. GitHub Actions using jiro4989/setup-nim-action

name: BuildAndTest

on: [push]

jobs:
  tests:
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v4
      - uses: jiro4989/setup-nim-action@v2
        with:
          nim-version: '2.0.0'
          repo-token: ${{ secrets.GITHUB_TOKEN }}
      - run: nimble build -y
      - run: nimble test -y

2.2. GitHub Actions using a container

name: Build
on: [push]
jobs:
  build:
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    container: nimlang/nim
    steps:
    - uses: actions/checkout@v1
    - name: Build project
      run: |
        nimble build -y
        mkdir -p artifacts
        mv REPLACEME artifacts/
    - name: Upload artifact
      uses: actions/upload-artifact@master
      with:
        name: REPLACEME
        path: artifacts

2.3. GitHub Actions using choosenim

name: Build
on: [push]
jobs:
  build:
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    steps:
    - uses: actions/checkout@v1
    - name: Cache choosenim
      id: cache-choosenim
      uses: actions/cache@v1
      with:
        path: ~/.choosenim
        key: ${{ runner.os }}-choosenim-1.0.2
    - name: Cache nimble

      run: |
        export PATH=$HOME/.nimble/bin:$PATH
        echo $PATH
        nimble build -y
        mkdir -p rel

    - name: Upload artifact
      uses: actions/upload-artifact@master
      with:
        name: release

3. Circle CI

The Nim docker image contains the latest version.

Use this .circleci/config.yml

version: 2
jobs:
  build:
    docker:
      - image: nimlang/nim
    steps:
      - run: echo 'export PATH=~/.nimble/bin:$PATH' >> $BASH_ENV
      - checkout
      # Reuse cached directories
      - restore_cache:
          key: nim-0000
      - run:
          command: |
            # Example: adding OS libraries
            apt-get update
            apt-get install -y --no-install-recommends libsodium23
      - save_cache:
          key: nim-0000
          paths:
            - .nimble
      - run: nimble build -y
      - run: nim c -r <mytest.nim>

4. Building Nim projects on Circle CI v2.0 with Docker

On Circle CI 2.0 you can use Docker containers to perform builds. The following example is taken from the following guide and builds against the current Nim version on both Ubuntu and Alpine Linux: Continuous Integration for Nim using Circle CI

version: 2
jobs:
  build:
    working_directory: /usr/src/dotenv
    docker:
      - image: nimlang/nim
    branches:
      only:
        - master
    steps:
      - checkout
      - run:
          name: test
          command: nim c -r tests/main.nim
  build_alpine:
    working_directory: /usr/src/dotenv
    docker:
      - image: nimlang/nim:alpine
    branches:
      only:
        - master
    steps:
      - checkout
      - run:
          name: test
          command: nim c -r tests/main.nim
workflows:
  version: 2
  build_and_test:
    jobs:
      - build
      - build_alpine

5. Building Nim projects on Travis CI

5.1. Using Docker

sudo: required
services:
  - docker
before_install:
  - docker pull nimlang/nim
script:
  - docker run nimlang/nim nim --version
  - docker run -v "$(pwd):/project" -w /project nimlang/nim sh -c "nimble install -dy && nimble test"
# - docker run -v "$(pwd):/project" -w /project nimlang/nim sh -c "find src/ -name '*.nim' -type f -exec nim doc {} \;"

Uncomment the last line to test embedded runnableExamples blocks.

5.2. Using choosenim

language: c

  directories:
  - .cache

## END: Assuming you rely on external dependencies

  - sh init.sh -y
  - export PATH=~/.nimble/bin:$PATH
  - echo "export PATH=~/.nimble/bin:$PATH" >> ~/.profile
  - choosenim $CHANNEL

script:
    - nimble refresh
    - nimble test

5.3. Devel branches

Building your code on Travis CI is useful to check regressions against the master and devel branches of Nim. Same for your code documentation.

You may encounter an issue with Sourceforge download and download just a webpage. In that case replace the generic URL by a direct link into a mirror like 'https://ayera.dl.sourceforge.net/project/mingw-w64/Toolchains%20targetting%20Win64/Personal%20Builds/mingw-builds/4.9.2/threads-win32/seh/x86_64-4.9.2-release-win32-seh-rt_v4-rev4.7z'

7. Azure Pipelines

The following script is used in Weave and supports the following features:

  • Clean separation between build stages

  • C and C++ compilation

  • 32 and 64-bit compilation on Windows and Linux

  • Windows, Mac and Linux

  • Caching

  • Nim stable (disabled by default) and Nim devel

  • Nim compilation with multiple cores

  • 10 parallel jobs (the default for public projects)

  • Proper "nimble install mydependency" handling on both POSIX and Windows. (On Windows, nimble install can fail to find Nim binaries under Azure Pipelines bash)

  • Proper settings of environment variables between tasks. Setting environment variables between tasks for use in later tasks is very poorly documented. Furthermore path variables on Windows bash are set wrong, requiring the use of separate Powershell and Bash tasks for setting path environment variables.

It sets a "WEAVE_TEST_LANG" environment variable that the nimble test task must checks to switch between C and C++ mode

8. Cross compilation and Release

Nim can generate lightweight executables. You may want to cross-compile the executable. Here is examples of releasing a cross-compiled executable.

8.1. GitHub Actions

Compress the RELEASE_FILES files and release those to GitHub Releases.
