Fixes issue #34. Also adds support for macOS and addresses issue #29. I have tested this PR on Windows 11 with python 3.10, on macOS with the system python, and different version of pyenv installed pythons, and on Ubuntu 21.04 with the system python and different other versions of python installed with pyenv.
