As a relatively small workflow, this would be a good candidate to rewrite from Nipype 1 to Nipype 2 (Pydra).

The advantages of Pydra include more Pythonic syntax, improved parallelism and concurrency, and ongoing support (while Nipype 1 is in palliative maintenance mode).
