In order to increase the usability of CityGML for more user groups and areas of application, the OGC CityGML SWG and the Special Interest Group 3D (SIG 3D) of the initiative Geodata Infrastructure Germany (GDI-DE) work since 2014 on the further development of CityGML which will result in the next major version CityGML 3.0.

The CityGML 3.0 standard will consist of at least two parts:

  1. the CityGML 3.0 Conceptual Model specification, which is to be released at the end of 2018, and
  2. the CityGML 3.0 GML Encoding specification, which is to be published early 2019. Further encoding specifications (e.g. relational database schema, JSON-based representation) may follow in the future.

The work on CityGML 3.0 was structured into 14 work packages (WPs):

  • WP 01 - UML and Conceptual Model Editor
  • WP 02 - Document Editor
  • WP 03 - Level-of-detail (LOD) Concept
  • WP 04 - GML and other Encodings Dependent of Conceptual Model
  • WP 05 - Managing Version Changes in GML and other Standards
  • WP 06 - Time Dependent and Alternative Versions
  • WP 07 - Material Properties
  • WP 08 - Land Administration
  • WP 09 - Non-Building Building-like Structures
  • WP 10 - Utility Networks
  • WP 11 - IFC Harmonisation and Volumetric Construction
  • WP 12 - Metadata Complex Attributes INSPIRE Harmonisation
  • WP 13 - Storeys and Other New Semantic Constructs
  • WP 14 - Parameterised Constructs and Construction

By the end of 2017, the results of the individual WPs were integrated into a consolidated version of the CityGML 3.0 Conceptual Model:

  • This includes in particular results from the WPs 03, 04, 05, 06, 09, 11, 12, and 13.
  • The WPs 07, 08, and 14 were not active.
  • The topic of WP 10 is currently taken care of by a dedicated CityGML Utility Network ADE working group and will not become part of CityGML 3.0.
  • WP 01 and WP 02 are currently working on the finalisation of the conceptual model and the specification document.

As the old wiki pages of the individual WPs are no longer of relevance, they were archived and can now be accessed via this ZIP file.
