Apparently there is also the option to use lsb_release -uc, presenting the upstream codename.

The information can also be taken from /etc/upstream-release/lsb-release:

$ cat /etc/upstream-release/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=20.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=focal
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu Focal Fossa"

I haven't tested any of this, though.
