Mac OS X's 'open' uses the default browser to open an URL. This is most likely what users expect when they don't explicitly configure another browser.

Yes, I work on Mac. "open" on the command line is like double clicking. It triggers the OS's default action, which is for an URL "open it in the default browser". |
