There is no issue for this yet, as I want to give people time to discuss tagged pointers on DPO.
This PR introduces the first use of tagged ints.
It removes a possible failure mode when handling memory errors, as there is no longer a need to heap allocate an int for the
lasti.Performance is neutral with no major outliers.
