- Warning if there are unrelated InDesign documents in the user‘s design guides folder, to eliminate any misleading missing font or link issues brought by extraneous documents
- In the export dialog, ‘Send Pages to Senior Designer’ button renamed to ‘Preview Pages for Senior Designer’
- User interface touch-ups and tweaks
Scripps College Journal Interactive Design System (Release, Build 11)
Version 1, Build 11A (v1.1)
Released on January 15, 2022
Internal for SCJ use only.
What's new
- Native support for Macs with Apple M chips, including the following models: MacBook Air (Late 2020 or later), MacBook Pro (Late 2020 or later), Mac mini (Late 2020 or later), iMac (Early 2021 or later), Mac Studio (Early 2022 or later).
- Users settings and parameters, and usage history now persist through app updates: Get new features while retaining user preferences.
- Multi-user support: Works fully with different user accounts on your Mac. Different users have their own independent settings.
- Privacy improvements: No longer checks if a different Mac ran the app last time. No longer reads or retains information like previous user’s name and system configuration. No longer retains any info about current system configuration, like name and software version, after app is quit. No longer reads or retains hardware identifier.
- Tips improvements: In the Actions window of Tips, type ‘tracker’ to quickly open the spreadsheet with links to the issue’s work. Or type ‘artwork’ to open the SCJ Artwork folder in Finder. Or ‘guide’ for the folder with the InDesign file. Or ‘what can you do’ for an overview of the app‘s features.
- Richer, more consistent and intelligent notification experience that suits macOS Monterey
- Built-in uninstaller: Completely uninstall the app, or reset its settings (requires senior designer authentication at this time)
- Log in as senior designer to disable a compatibility check after it detects older software
- The most useful new features of software updates are re-emphasized after installation, when design guides are opened
- Size reduced by over half, from ~4 MB to ~1.5 MB
- Minor user interface tweaks
Fixed bugs
- If user renames or deletes Artwork folder, a new folder is created instead of crashing
- Crash if InDesign and Illustrator versions are from different years
- On MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, buttons on touchscreen could be slightly misshapen on macOS Big Sur or later
- On macOS Big Sur or later, when the user is offered a list of older design guides, the titles of the design guides could be truncated
- When magazine production schedule is delayed, the issue year reflected in the About window didn’t match volume number
- One-time security warning from Apple is worded more positively for new users
Scripps College Journal Interactive Design System (Release, Build 10)
Version 1, Build 10A (v1.0)
Released on October 1, 2021
Internal for SCJ use only.
What's new
- Dragging & dropping a Word doc onto the SCJ Dock icon places that story directly on the active (currently viewed) page of the magazine design in InDesign. It's an incredible time saver. The right text frame is automatically selected, the placed text from Word is formatted and typeset in SCJ style using the guide's built-in paragraph styles, and the story is reflowed through all linked text frames, across any number of pages — it's all automatic.
- Finds and suggests SCJ design guides from previous years on your computer if you don’t have the newest ones. If design guide was downloaded before the SCJ Volume incremented, but it's still the newest guide available, it is now still automatically used despite the older SCJ Volume number
- Quality-of-life improvements to magazine exporter, including sound notifications when export jobs finish, ability to cancel export jobs at the last minute, and clearer options after the export job completes
- Welcome sound and new message on first run that appears in InDesign, which lets you know that the design guides are successfully installed, and outlines some quick and useful features like the drag-and-drop story placing, visual art placing, and magazine export functions
- Intelligently knows when the cover illustration is open, not just the magazine design — even if you have InDesign or Illustrator open with other projects, but not SCJ. This makes the experience even smoother than before when you use the app without quitting it
- Much clearer wording when design guides are updated and older guides already exist on your computer. Functionality remains similar.
- Directly stream main design guide tutorial video (when available) through Tips
- Explanation added when app requests access to Documents and Downloads folders (to download design guides, and delete app installer on first run)
- More reliable on unstable Internet connections
- Senior designer can delay SCJ Volume from incrementing for the whole team
- Various optimizations and improved security
Fixed bugs
- Reliability improvements when placing visual art on the page. Previously, placing an art piece with the app could result in a stroke being applied around the image. And attempting to place an art piece on the right hand page of a spread would often result in nothing happening.
- On subsequent runs, SCJ InDesign workspace layout wouldn’t always be reapplied properly
- Running the app in a different user account on the same computer would crash
- Magazine export function exports all pages even if your InDesign export dialog had select pages chosen, and won’t export without SCJ PDF presets installed
- If user located a design guide folder manually because it was placed in a non-default location, and then updated it, the app would not use the updated guides until the following run
- Rare situation where if app was run on one designer's computer, and then transferred and run on a different one, the resulting notice would correctly offer a ‘Reinstall’ option, which wouldn’t proceed due to a bug
- Rare encounter where the ‘Quit’ button on the ”Your network connection is offline” message wouldn't actually quit the app (this message appears if the user's Internet connection is not working when the app tries to download the design guides)
Scripps College Journal Interactive Design System (Beta, Build 9)
Version 0, Build 9 (v0.9)
Released on July 18, 2021
Beta not for public release.
Internal for SCJ use only.
What's new
- InDesign exporter is fully complete and out of beta. Drag the InDesign file onto the SCJ Dock icon to export the magazine right down to our print house’s specifications, or email your layout work to the senior designer. Package away!
- New announcements feature delivers SCJ staff news to all app users, if the senior designer would like to do so
- Some users don't quit either SCJ or the Adobe apps when they're done working. The app's behavior supporting relaunch of design guides without quitting the SCJ app is now much more intelligent, paying attention to whether InDesign has the magazine files open or not, and what the user initially chose to work on, in order to decide whether to display Tips or the app's Welcome screen
- Even clearer installer interface lets the user know if they've already installed the app, if they launch the app from the DMG installer
- Clearer wording better differentiates a design guide update from an app update
- Minor improvements to user interface wording and behavior when alerting user that their storage is too full, like displaying the free space left
- Enhanced permissions approval experience takes the user directly to the right part of System Preferences if the user declines a required permission
Fixed bugs
- Minor bug would cause the “Press ⌘Q to quit” notification to not always show up
- Patched bug (affecting no current users) that caused compatibility check to fail on future macOS releases, like macOS Monterey
Scripps College Journal Interactive Design System (Beta, Build 8.1)
Version 0, Build 8.1 (v0.8.1)
Released on June 4, 2021
Beta not for public release.
Internal for SCJ use only.
What's new
- App behavior now takes into account that some users don't quit the app when they're done — so under certain conditions, like when InDesign or Illustrator are no longer open, the app will surface the Welcome screen instead of the Tips helper, so you can get right back to work
- Checks for updates without quitting and relaunching the app, not just at launch
Fixed bugs
- Downloading new design guides multiple times over weeks using the Update option, rather than the Update & Replace option, would eventually result in the user being perpetually prompted to update the guides, even though the app did update them successfully
- Resolves bug with SCJ automatic updater that would only update app partially
- Minor bug: when the app prompted the user to select a new design guide folder because they renamed, moved or deleted the existing one, the user would be asked twice, when they should've been asked only once
Scripps College Journal Interactive Design System (Beta, Build 8)
Version 0, Build 8 (v0.8)
Released on May 22, 2021
Beta not for public release.
Internal for SCJ use only.
What's new
- Dragging & dropping an image onto the Dock icon now not only moves it into the correct SCJ Artwork folder, but places it directly in the design of your magazine in InDesign (if it's open), with a proportionally-sized frame
- Speed improvements to revised updater engine that rapidly auto-installs and relaunches the app with the updates
- Lets you know if the app has been open and idle for 24 hours, so you can close it
- Some minor revisions to wording in the user interface
Fixed bugs
- If a user was launching the app for the first time, but already had InDesign open, there was a chance the app would show an error instead of successfully relaunching InDesign
- Choosing to only work on the cover would still open both the magazine and the cover templates
- If a user had out-of-date or missing Adobe software, after the app showed instructions to rectify the software situation, it would not quit automatically, and instead show a cryptic error that did not affect usability
