Install a programm with apt-get

http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/apt-get

Update git installation
sudo apt-get install git -V

Install a program by just downloading its source.

Put the program where you want, and add a symlink o /usr/bin/local for example pointing to the executable itself (idem than drush install for drupal)
