# PD-Camera project

PD-Camera is an unofficial, experimental accessory for Panic's [Playdate](https://play.date) handheld console, which as the name hopefully suggests allows the device to record pictures as well as animated gifs, in whopping 1-bit color and QVGA (320x240) resolution. Kind of like the [1998 accessory for that other monochrome handheld device](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy_Camera).

For more context on how this project came along, you can find its devlog [on Playdate's Dev forum](https://devforum.play.date/t/playdate-oneil-camera/11043/28).

This repository contains the hardware and firmware of the PD-Camera accessory. The source for the companion app that runs on the Playdate itself _will eventually_ be found [here](https://github.com/t0mg/pd-camera).

## Hardware

The project is based on a Teensy 4.1 microcontroller that acts as a USB host to the Playdate and communicates with it over serial, including evaluating payloads in the Lua runtime (see [here](https://github.com/jaames/playdate-reverse-engineering/blob/main/usb/usb.md) for more details). The Teensy is also connected to an OV7670 camera module via its CMOS Sensor Interface (CSI) built into the IMXRT1062 MPU and using [this dedicated library](https://github.com/mjborgerson/OV7670).

A LiPo battery, custom PCB and a custom 3d-printable case complete the assembly (gerber and stl files _will eventually be_ provided in this repository).

## Firmware

The qucickest way to get started is to use the [Teensy loader application](https://www.pjrc.com/teensy/loader.html) to flash a prebuilt firmware.hex file from this repository's releases. Or read on to build your own.

### Building

This project uses [PlatformIO](https://platformio.org/) to manage dependencies and build toolchain, see [platformio.ini](platformio.ini).

The source code comprises a single, messy, [main.cpp](src/main.cpp) file. It relies the following libraries:

This directory is intended for project header files.

A header file is a file containing C declarations and macro definitions
to be shared between several project source files. You request the use of a
header file in your project source file (C, C++, etc) located in `src` folder
by including it, with the C preprocessing directive `#include'.

Including a header file produces the same results as copying the header file
into each source file that needs it. Such copying would be time-consuming
and error-prone. With a header file, the related declarations appear
in only one place. If they need to be changed, they can be changed in one
place, and programs that include the header file will automatically use the
new version when next recompiled. The header file eliminates the labor of
finding and changing all the copies as well as the risk that a failure to
find one copy will result in inconsistencies within a program.

In C, the usual convention is to give header files names that end with `.h'.
It is most portable to use only letters, digits, dashes, and underscores in
header file names, and at most one dot.

This directory is intended for project specific (private) libraries.
PlatformIO will compile them to static libraries and link into executable file.

The source code of each library should be placed in a an own separate directory
("lib/your_library_name/[here are source files]").

This folder contains the Lua source files for the 2 functions that are hardcoded as bytecode in [main.cpp](../src/main.cpp), in order for the Teensy to evaluate payloads over serial in the Playdate's lua runtime (see [here](https://github.com/jaames/playdate-reverse-engineering/blob/main/usb/usb.md#eval) for details).

To generate tye bytecode:

1) write lua function calls in a separate lua file (see [lua](/lua) folder). Add padding to make room for the data you'll need to transmit.
2) compile the files to `.pdz` using Playdate SDK's `pdc`
3) extract `.luac` with [this Python script](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jaames/playdate-reverse-engineering/main/tools/pdz.py)

e.g `python pdz.py main.pdx\processMessage.pdz .`

4) convert `.luac` to C byte array with [this tool](https://notisrac.github.io/FileToCArray/)
5) paste into C source code and replace the padding with custom data (see [main.cpp](../src/main.cpp))
