The same word or set of words can be interpreted very differently based on a person’s lived experience, their sense of safety, the political context at that time, or even just their personality. A word when reclaimed by a marginalized community should also be distinguished from its usage in demeaning and stereotyping a group. For instance, the word ‘slut’ which is broadly considered demeaning and misogynistic in its use has also been [reclaimed by some feminists](https://feminisminindia.com/2020/02/04/feel-liberated-reclaiming-slut-shaming-slang-words/) and the famous ‘slut walk’ event is an example of this.
So, how do you define what is hate speech, what is abusive, or what is considered a slur? Moreover, who defines it?
