What Is The Geospatial Analysis for Disaster Evacuation Planning Project?

This project is a Senior Design Capstone project assembled by Dr. Joseph Louis and Oregon State University. The Senior Design Capstone program is a year-long course organized by the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University where students are presented with various opportunities to design, implement, and promote unique and engaging projects sponsored by companies, businesses, and proposers/student clubs with personal projects.

Why Does This Project Exist?

The recovery operations after a disaster are complex, time-consuming, and critical for a community to bounce back from the disaster. Unfortunately, the uncertain nature of disasters, along with the limited availability of resources, and competing operations, make it difficult for emergency managers to appropriately plan operations. These operations are further complicated by the spatial interdependency between infrastructure and recovery operations. For example, a damaged water pipeline cannot be repaired if the access roads are not cleared of debris. This project will analyze such interdependencies between networks using GIS and simulation modeling to identify vulnerabilities in communities and thus enable the suitable allocation of resources for their recovery.
