Facilities Data

List of files:

  • FacilitiesReport-533.csv: Full report of all facilities owned, operated, or rented by UMD. Obtained from facilities.umd.edu > Facilities Info > Facilities Report (Download). You can find the page here (note, this link will download the file). This report contains more fields than "Facilities Report" (the one that does not say download). This page also provides the ability to download the tables displayed as a csv. It contains less data. Do not use it.
  • umd-building-gis.json: building location data. Made by hand. This needs to be improved.

Terms Used

The facilities reports uses some opaque terminology. Below are links to references from where these terms are defined, along with a TL;DR for most terms.

Links to definitions:

  1. Definition of Building Areas (NCES)
  2. Building Area Definitions (from Fac. Mgmt)
  3. Space Use Codes (NCES)

Note that the facilities inventory page contains nice pop-ups for definitions. Some of those are duplicated below.

Terms TL;DR

  • FQI: Facility Quality Index. (Allegedly) scored from 1-5. From the facilities site (building inventory page):

Code 1: Normal maintenance

Code 2: Limited to moderate renovation

Code 3: Moderate to extensive renovation

Code 4: Comprehensive modernization

Code 5: Demolition, replacement or downgrade use

  • Func Codes: Building function codes. Defines the general purpose of a building. Does not seem to be an NCES standard. Scored 1-7. From the facilities site (building inventory page):

Academic (1, 2, 3) Buildings are utilized for instruction, research or physical education activities. Administrative (4) Buildings are primarily administrative (office/support). Library (5) Buildings are primarily for "study" and all related Library programs. This code is used to identify major library facilities. Branch libraries housed in multiple use facilities are not included in this category. Auxiliary (6) Buildings are primarily student residence halls, student union, or dining halls. Also includes those buildings which rely on student fees or institutional funds and do not currently receive State General Funds for operating expenses. Non-Academic (7) Buildings are used primarily for plant and maintenance operations, storage, shop, public safety, and other non-academic support related space.

  • GSF, NASF, NUSF, etc.: see links 1 & 2

  • A###: Each one of these (e.g. A110) corresponds to a space use code. See link 3.

  • Replacement Values: Cost to replace the building. From building inventory:

Total design and construction cost to replace a building to modern codes/standards, including correcting functional obsolescence (reconfiguration or other modifications to meet the current functional needs of the occupants). Include all soft cost such as inspection/testing. Only exclusions are movable equipment (equipment that would fall out if you could pick the buildings up and turn it upside down) and site/utility costs beyond five (5) feet from the building.

  • Renovation Cost: Cost to renovate the building: From building inventory:

Total design and construction cost to renovate a building to modern codes/standards, including correcting functional obsolescence. Include all soft costs such as inspection /testing. Only exclusions are movable equipment (equipment that would fall out if you could pick the buildings up and turn it upside down) and site/utility costs beyond five (5) feet from the building.
