Unfortunately that is a per-user configuration option, we need a system-wide solution.

Anyone know a clean solution?

I've looked into this before, never finding an adequate solution.

A workaround might be to just disable monitor sleep through gsettings e.g.

 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay 0

which is persistent but acts (I believe) on a user-basis, but we can have this as part of a robot-codebase README. Will test this on the robots.
