Since this fixes a bug introduced in release 9.1.2, I'm targeting this PR against the release-9.1 branch so that 9.1.x users can easily fix it. It's probably not worth formally releasing a 9.1.3 for this one fix, but if anything else crops up that would justify such a release, we'll at least have this in the right place.
