P-HOTPANTS ========== Main contribution We propose to utilize both the multicore CPUs and the many-core GPUs to parallelize the computation of astronomic image subtraction. Our work is based on the online-available image-subtraction package, “HIGH ORDER TRANSFORM OF PSF AND TEMPLATE SUBTRACTION” from http://www.astro.washington.edu/users/becker/v2.0/c_software.html. For illustration propose, we divide the original programs into five steps- Initialization, Filling, Checking, Convolving and Output, and provide partial executional time at the end of each step. Generally, we use the GPU to perform numerical computation and the CPU to check or make decisions. For the most time-consuming part, Convolving, we fully harveste the horsepower of the heterogenous processors. With careful turning and work partitioning, we achieve an overall 4 times speedup over the sequential version on a desktop with an Intel i7 CPU and an NVIDIA GTX580 GPU. We focus on image subtraction procedure, thus removing extractkern.c, extractkernOnes.c and maskim.c in the original source files. ========== File description main.c controls the entire program, i.e., Input, Filling, Checking, Convolving and Output five steps. At the end of each step, the execution time is outputted. gpu_kernel.cu contains several computation-intensified functions, originally located in alard.c. Both GPU kernel and GPU memory allocation can be found in gpu_kernel.cu. functions.c has the functions that relate to checking and turning. Global variables for .c and .cu files are in global.h and gforg.h, respectively. ========== Compile Both HOTPANTS and P-HOTPANTS were developed on Linux. Other operating systems may require minor changes to the source code. Synthetic image is not recommended for inputs. Modify the GPU-PART parameter in gpu_kernel.cu to set the ratio of GPU workload in Convolving.
