Coin Hoards

Coin hoards (multiple coins found in the same archaeological context) are in integral part of the study of coins. A few Roman Imperial coin hoards have Nomisma IDs, but we are lacking in this area. However, many Roman Republican Coin Hoards have identifiers in Coin Hoards of the Roman Republic (CHRR), and virtually every Greek coin hoard you encounter in these ebooks will have been given an identifier in the 1973 Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards (IGCH), which is published online at http://coinhoards.org.

How to Search

The data and interface underlying Coin Hoards of the Roman Republic are more sophisticated than IGCH. There is a keyword search page that also allows for more granular search by other fields and a browse page. Hoards are usually titled after the place where they were found, and sometimes may carry more than one name in publication. The place names in CHRR are based on the modern place and country (derived from Geonames.org), which may not actually correspond to the place used in print at the time of the book's original publication. I can put you in touch with Kris Lockyear at UCL for further clarification, if you have difficulty locating the correct ID of a Roman Republican hoard.

IGCH only has a very basic keyword search. You might be able to pinpoint an IGCH number by keyword search for the place name mentioned in the text (See Saida Find, for example): http://coinhoards.org/browse?q=saida. There are several hoards found in Saida, but the correct ID can be ascertained by checking the description for further context. If in doubt, contact Peter van Alfen.
