This file contains data sets that are not available in the R-Instat library but can be accessed from the links given here. In this report, we have described how to access and download the data sets from the different websites namely, MICS Survey data, IPUMS data, Procurement(corruption) data, and Kenya Open data(KNBS). Additionally, there are some analyses of the data sets from some countries.

MICS SURVEY DATA

These survey data are on the MICS site and, there is a separate discussion topic on them on Github. The data are available in SPSS files together with full analyses of the data. In order to access the data, click on Surveys.

  • Process of downloading data sets from MICS site.
  1. Click on https://mics.unicef.org/surveys to create an account.
  2. State your reasons and need for the data.
  3. It will take two to three business days for the account to be verified.
  4. Finally, once the account has been verified, you will be able to access the data files, reports, and screenshots from different countries.

We have uploaded some of the reports and data files downloaded from the MICS site; for Kenya(Kakamega County) and Pakistan. You can access these files here https://github.com/africanmathsinitiative/R-Instat-Help/tree/master/Kenya-MICS-Files.
These files are not available in R-Instat's library but can be imported directly into R-Instat using the File > Open From File dialog.

IPUMS DATA

IPUMS provides census and survey data from around the world integrated across time and space. Here we describe the steps required to access the data available from IPUMS and the extraction procedures.
Access to the [IPUMS-International] documentation is freely available without restriction; however, users must apply for access to the data. The application system requires a description of an applicant's proposed research and asks for the user's institutional affiliation and other information to verify identity.

Applicants are required to agree to a number of conditions to use the data. Access to the system enables a user to extract data from any country in the database. To apply for access to visit http://international.ipums.org/international-action/menu.

Below are the steps to access the data;

Step 1: Go to www.ipums.org
This is a website where you can access many years of micro-data. The IPUMS staff have integrated the micro-data samples so that you can easily select the variables you need for your analysis.
Step 2: Click on where you want to access data depending on which data you need; you can click on IPUMS International for census microdata and IPUMS Global health for health data e.t.c.
Step 3: Familiarize Yourself with which Variables are Available.
Click on “Browse & Select Data” in the Data sidebar menu. This will bring you to a webpage where you can browse variables by Household, Person, alphabetical listing, or via a keyword search.
Step 4: Decide which Sample You Need
Once you determine which variables you want, you have to decide which sample you need. In part, this is based on what variables are available in each sample.
Step 5: Choose the Sample(s) and Variables for your Extract
Step 6: Create the Extract
Step 7: Download the data, codebook, and command files. When you get the email from IPUMS there will be a link. Click on the link to go to the download page.

After downloading the data you can now extract your data from the compressed files. IPUMS gives you the data in compressed format (the ".tar.gz" extension) in order to make the download faster. Before you can open the data in R-Instat, you must uncompress or unzip this file.
These files are not available in R-Instat's library but can be imported directly into R-Instat using the File > Open From File dialog.

We have also uploaded some of the reports and data files, and you can access these files here https://github.com/africanmathsinitiative/R-Instat-Help/tree/master/IPUM%20Files.

PROCUREMENT(Corruption Data)

The FCDO-funded (formerly DFID) project “Curbing Corruption in Government Contracting” releases the contracting datasets collected from national public procurement portals in 10 low and middle-income countries: Chile, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Mexico, Paraguay, Uganda, and Uruguay.

Here we give the procedure on how to access the data sets. We downloaded the Uganda procurement data and to access this dataset, use this link Global public procurement dataset: selected Low and Middle-Income Country datasets.

This file is in two formats, download the .csv format. Once downloaded, extract the zipped file so that you can easily import them into R-Instat using the File>Import From File dialog.
The procurement dataset from Uganda has 47759 observations and 268 variables.
We have uploaded some of the reports and data files. You can access these files here https://github.com/africanmathsinitiative/R-Instat-Help/tree/master/Procurement%20Data%20Files.
These files are not available in R-Instat's library but can be imported directly into R-Instat using the File > Open From File dialog.

KENYA OPEN DATA(KNBS)

These data are found in the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program website. The program has collected, analyzed, and disseminated accurate and representative data on population, health, HIV, and nutrition through more than 400 surveys in over 90 countries.
To access the data from this site click on this link The DHS Program - Quality information to plan, monitor, and improve population, health, and nutrition programs.

  • In order to download datasets from the DHS website;
  1. Click on https://dhsprogram.com/ to create an account.
  2. Fill in your demographics, then create a new project by stating the project name and describing the project. Select the region you need your data from and then select the country, in our case we chose the Sub-Saharan region and Kenya. Then save your information.
  3. It will take two to three business days for the account to be verified.
  4. Finally, once the account has been verified, you will be able to access and download the data files, reports, and questionnaires.

We have uploaded some of the reports and data files downloaded from the DHS site. You can access these files here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1IB-248wJwsoNRdui5wvC0iUwIBUnnxpB?usp=sharing.
