Small changes that prepare for merging vectorised version. Also, plotting is improved and error handling for severely discrete data (e.g. giving rise to 0 environmental variance) is added. (Created in April 2016, but only based on commits made in Feb 2015, right after the previous version).

This version adds the ability to select a subset of subjects to use, useful if there are bad subjects with missing data. Extraneous printing is also reduced.
