Excitations are generally happy with IBEX and it is working well for them bar some minor bugs that were swiftly fixed.
Favourite thing about IBEX:
They like the integrated log plotter a lot. Convenient, no messing around with multiple windows etc.
Thing they would like to change:
- Remove unnecessary standard perspectives, specifically mentioned IOC Log and Alarms: They never look at them.
- Alarms are too cryptic, makes it hard to tell what is wrong or whether they need to worry about it. From their perspective, it just makes users worry unnecessarily. Need to be more descriptive to make it useful
- Liked the idea of being able to acknowledge alarms.
- I asked whether they ever noticed the IOC log flashing. Answer was they do not recall seeing it, unsure whether it's because they do not pay attention or because there just weren't any log messages.
- I asked whether they ever look at the IOC log when things aren't working. Answer was no, they spot issues in other ways or just ask support.
Script server:
- Have only used it once to check they get how it works.
- They understand the advantages of the script server and see themselves using it in the future, they just have not had time to play with it as they have been away.
- Suggested that integration with the future script generator is important, and that the two are strongly linked in most people's minds
Other:
- They have recurring issues with Fermi choppers, but likely due to faults with hardware/controller as they are very old. There are plans to replace the system, however this is a long-term project (in the region of a couple of years). They will check we are in the loop about developments regarding this upgrade.
- Said users are generally happy using IBEX, mostly interacting with it via python scripting.
- There is a yearly training course for new users, where they get an introduction to the facility and the control systems on a variety of instruments over the course of two weeks. They said this would be a good opportunity for us to come collect some feedback from people who are new to IBEX. The next one should happen around June '19. They are organised by one of the MERLIN scientists.
